In recent years, with the popularity of mobile devices, mobile handheld devices have become necessary electronic partners in studying, working and daily life. Computing social environment provides an important prerequisite for development of Augmented reality (AR) technique. AR technology is the actual combination of real world and virtual data which has real-time interaction.Utilizing AR technique by mobile devices,especially by mobile phones, can help people intuitively understand the abstract concept and form social practices. However, there still exists many technical difficulties of mobile AR technology. This article concentrates on AR applications in mobile phones how to bring fresh energy to the social media development.
Early researches on Mobile augmented reality (AR) technique always makes reference to empiricism. Nevertheless,with the rapid development of mobile phones(Rainee,2012), mobile AR applications also makes progress quickly(Liao and Humphreys,2015). Liao and Humphrey(2015) point out that as the one of most famous mobile AR application, Layar is widely used in mobile devices, such as mobile smartphone and tablet devices.
As an emerging mobile AR browser, users can base on location-based services(LBS) to create their interesting content on the Layar. Moreover, layar helps build relationship between different people. Layar also can mediate social practices in using(Liao and Humphreys,2015). According to analysis of layar users, Liao and Humphreys(2015) mention that mobile AR technology can discuss local construction in real life from the perspective of space. Furthermore, mobile AR technique as a growing industry will play an important tool to adjust social contradictions and promote social communication,which potential influence people’s urban life.
Augmented reality (AR) technology is considered as a tool to manage the surroundings. Because it improves physical society by utilizing virtual data. It can encourage people’s creativity and motivate their imagination in specific environment(Nam,2015). Azuma(1997) states that AR technology not only connects realistic environment and virtual factors but also has three characteristics: three-dimensional vision, immediacy and interactive. Moreover, Nam(2015) indicates that mobile devices are pervasive, meanwhile, they also provide more platforms for AR technology developing because mobile network and locate function greatly stimulate the development of AR applications, social platform and potential users. Contrasting with early AR work pays more attention to technology development which includes how to correct align virtual scene and real environment, but recently,developers focus on the interaction between AR applications and experimenters(Nam,2015).Further, with collaborative development of AR technology, mobile devices has also changed many residents’ lifestyle, and helps them better integrate into social media. There are many mobile AR applications have made remarkable achievements at present, not only because their technical achievement, but also because they play significant roles on building interpersonal relationship and social practices.
In 2010, Japanese saw millions of butterflies in the augmented reality sky because of iButterfly activity.People used “iButterfly” application to see virtual butterflies and then caught them in Japan. After collection, people used these butterflies as coupons, different types of butterflies represented different coupons. Moreover, butterflies were able to exchange to friends or other people.
This mobile application that made use of mobile augmented reality (AR) technology connect virtual object and real life. Based on mobile phones positioning system, different places have different types of butterflies, it also means people could go different landscapes to look for the butterfly they want. Mobile AR technology helps this commercial plan to increase flexible and recreational elements. Furthermore, if people catch butterflies with repeating species, they can exchange them to other people. This setting encourages people building communication with others, and utilize interpersonal relationship to promote more people use this application.
Faceu as a popular self-timer application ingenious use AR technology which can real-time overlay on the face with dynamic decoration, and makes selfie more diversified and vivid.
Dynamic stickers are the main form which AR technology represents in Faceu application. There are hundreds of stickers store in this application,and users can choose different stickers which they like to decorate their self-portraits. This camera software not only supports a single photo, but also helps to take photos with other people.
Common camera applications always makes users take photos at first, then adds other elements to beautify the photos by post production. Faceu application uses real-time tracking technology through the face which makes adding new elements in the process of taking photos come true. Mobile AR technology help Faceu to cut cost of photo post-production. Moreover, after using Faceu to make animated dynamic pictures, users can choose different social media platforms to share them with other people. Because of this creative design, Faceu shows how AR technology is used in urban life practices. Meanwhile, it also promotes the development of social media communication.
Recent years, IKEA utilizes mobile AR technology to introduce new mobile application. In this new application, consumers can use IKEA official magazine as identification tool can show products in these magazine. Meanwhile, users can utilize mobile AR technology seeing 3D images of these products at home before they buy them.
Based on real-time location system, this application provide a good combination of virtual products and the real environment. Customers can see products from different angles by rotating screen, and judging whether this product is suitable for home. This AR technology application help people save time for shopping, and promote the popularization of AR technology in life practices.
Discussion of Campaign
Mobil augmented reality (AR) as an emerging technology has vast potential for future development. And it also plays a signification role in my campaign in this semester.
AR technology combines data from virtual worlds and real environment, using 3D projection technology allows users to direct fell fictitious information which exist in space.
The campaign, ‘Be the filter’, concentrates on discussing fake news which includes some fake news in our daily life. AR technology can give opportunity to verify the authenticity of news by using virtual data.
Image stereoscopic model offers more strong evidences to verify the authenticity of news. I can use these facts to support some viewpoint in this campaign or even let other disputes test news content by AR technology.
Mobile augmented reality (AR) technology is a useful technique for people’s life and social media development, and it has huge commercial potential in application.
AR technology provides a novel development patterns of social media, and this technology considered as a new element put into existing development model by an increasing of applications. The combination of virtual and real-world technology uniquely belong to AR technology help social media communication to become dynamic not static.
Mobile AR technology will show escalating trend in next years. With the popularization of mobile phones, applications in mobile phones become more diverse. Relying on mobile phones come with positioning system, AR technology application developing is the inevitable trend in the new media era.
However,on the one hand, there still exists some obstructions of AR technology developing. People’s awareness of AR technology is still limited to its definition rather than using space thinking to prepare for physical construction. Foe example, when a construction company want to build a new building, if it uses AR technology to show and discuss building scheme, it is more visual to make consumers see the finished product. Moreover, it can mediate potential contradictions in the process. Meanwhile, it provides opportunities to consumers to exchange opinions with together. On the other hand, mobile AR technology must bases on locating system which is the main reason for opponents. They against AR technology for invasion of privacy and excessive limit in specific place.
Mobile AR technology development still faces some challenges and difficulties, but in the era of rapid development of social media, the development of AR technology must be an irresistible trend.
